Charles Bridge, Prague

#Bridge, #Landmark, #Must See
Step into the world of medieval Prague with a stroll across pedestrian-friendly Charles Bridge. Completed in 1402, the bridge replaced an older structure and became a major commercial link between eastern and western Europe. For nearly four centuries, this Gothic structure was also the only connection between the city's old town and the growing residential neighborhoods on the other side of the Vltava River. The bridge rests on 16 arches and spans 621 m (2,037 ft), featuring a continuous alley of 30 statues depicting saints venerated at the turn of the 18th century, when they became the structure's main decorative elements. • A beautiful bridge full of history. For a free attraction you simply cannot come to Prague and not see it. The statues are intriguing and the towers very gothic looking. The view from the bridge on a ...  more »

  • A bridge steeped in history, and has a certain magical quality about it! Very gothic and the statues are almost gargoyle like. Very busy though and I would imagine it's better to visit at night when t...  more »

  • Honestly a beautiful sight. It's beautiful to just walk along the bridge and see people perform all kinds of activities for money. There are bands that play instruments, souvenir shops, there are talented artists that can make you a portrait of yourself and this is just on the bridge itself. The areas around it are full of places where you can eat and there are street entertainers at almost every corner. The shops around base their profits on tourists so they all know English. There are two wax museums around aswell which are really worth stopping by. Overall I'd say the area gives plenty of sights to see, lots of interest points, plenty of food and a hell of a good time!
  • Ever since we arrived in Germany, my one goal was to be able to visit Prague and see Charles Bridge. It was crowded and a lot of people a trying to get photos everywhere. Still, you can always manage to find a spot to take good photos. Definitely walk it completely! There is a lot of stuff to see at both ends of the bridge. Always good when travelling to be aware of the change of currency. Have good walking shoes for there is a lot to see and the places are not exactly close to each other. For those out there wanting a photo of the whole bridge as I show here, just follow the street along side the river and you will find a spot. Enjoy Prague while you are there. There is tons to see.
  • Walking along the bridge was a truly an amazing experience! The statues along the bridge depicting the life of Christ is fascinating. A paradise for the art lovers! A lot of history and surreal architecture.. Classic Prague! Can get really crowded over the bridge.. definitely recommend an early morning visit!
  • I split the difference between a 1 and 4-star review, leaning towards you, the visitor being smart enough to heed my advice. If you get there first thing in the morning, around 8-8:30, there are few crowds, great photo opportunities, no vendors blocking your photos, and stunning views. It was something I was glad to get to do. Arrive after that though, and it's shoulder to shoulder people and trinket vendors. You can't take photos and even at the ends, off the bridge you can barely move. It's like riding a cattle car (and about as pleasantly smelling). Arrive early and enjoy yourself.
  • Charles bridge beyond deserves it's glorious reputation. One can't help but feel a palpable sense of history as you walk and reflect on the statues that dot both sides. I recommend going early in the morning (easy for the jet lagged), you'll have the place to yourself and the sunrise is great. Be sure to check out the colorful locks (see picture).

Where to stay in Prague

As one of Europe’s main tourist destinations, Prague offers a selection of accommodations to match its popularity, from luxury hotels to very affordable hostels. For an authentic Prague experience, stay at one of the guesthouses or boutique hotels housed inside the city's historical buildings. You'll find many lodgings concentrated around the most popular sightseeing areas, such as the Old Town, the Lesser Town, and Prague Castle, but there are also a good number of them in other neighborhoods. The best way to make Prague feel like home is to rent a fully furnished apartment.
