Strahov Monastery, Prague

3.7
Although its eye-catching spires rise imposingly over the city's skyline, the main attraction of Strahov Monastery remains its library, containing thousands of editions of the Bible. Established in the 1140s for the Premonstratensian religious order, the monastery functioned until 1950, when the Communist regime closed it down and imprisoned most of its monks. Returned to the order in 1989, the monastery underwent massive architectural restorations to repair damage caused by years of neglect. Inside the monastery's main gate, you can visit a 17th-century church, housing a valuable collection of artworks from the Gothic era, and the famed library's two halls. Linked by an elaborately decorated passage, the two halls contain a collection of nearly 3,000 original manuscripts. • One of the many lovely sites in Prague, beautiful church and lovely courtyard. Lots of art, right in the castle area, up on the hill.  more »
  • On petrin Hill is the monastery of strahov. Nice to see him but not necessary especially if then you see the klementinum. Inside has the show animal and ancient coins and the library.

  • Visit the Strahov Monastery only includes a visit to the corridor with access to the philosophical and Theological Hall, admission fee pretty high due to the fact that can be seen only from the doors, which are usually full of visitors. The Strahov picture gallery is more comprehensive, just a staff absolutely with abuse-pensioner, that there's talk came in and serve your hours, visitors or their comments is not interested at all, moreover, is annoy. At the time of our visit, one of the other visitors, drew attention to the bad image description as soon as he went, the staff began to talk bluntly about whether he would want to return the admission before the address correction wrong labeled image. We left disgusted.

  • The library is impressive. However, you see it from a distance as you are not allowed to enter. The entrance fee costs too much for a walk upstairs that lasts about 5 minutes, including your time straining to see the library. Google Arts app does a better job at displaying this library.
  • The Monastery itself is rather lackluster. The library visit is a scam, as you don't get to go inside the library - rather, you see it from a narrow door, always packed with huddling tourists. Plus, you're not allowed to take a picture unless you pay more. The books on the narrow corridor you do get to walk through are fake. The church is gated off - you're not allowed to walk through the church and have to view the nave from a distance. Again, pictures are not allowed, for some bizarre reason. Do not waste your time.
  • Library is the best!! Very cool and certainly worth a visit. They charge you extra to take photos which is a bit silly but you can just buy a postcard instead
  • You pay more if you want to make photos. You need a reservation and you pay more if you want to move free. Otherwise you pay a lot for like 5min looking at the library. But you are not allowed to go inside or make Photos. But you get a dirty note (surely you have to give it back) with little information about the library. The tourist Shop is as large as the area you are allowed to move. And after all they still ask you for a donation. Never ever go inside. The view outside ist better.
  • A beautiful place half way up in the hills, you can take a walk here or go by tram. The monastary site offers beautiful views over Prague, there is a restaurant here and a small museum. It is just a beautiful place to walk around.

Where to stay in Prague

As one of Europe’s main tourist destinations, Prague offers a selection of accommodations to match its popularity, from luxury hotels to very affordable hostels. For an authentic Prague experience, stay at one of the guesthouses or boutique hotels housed inside the city's historical buildings. You'll find many lodgings concentrated around the most popular sightseeing areas, such as the Old Town, the Lesser Town, and Prague Castle, but there are also a good number of them in other neighborhoods. The best way to make Prague feel like home is to rent a fully furnished apartment.
