Strahov Monastery, Prague

3.8
Although its eye-catching spires rise imposingly over the city's skyline, the main attraction of Strahov Monastery remains its library, containing thousands of editions of the Bible. Established in the 1140s for the Premonstratensian religious order, the monastery functioned until 1950, when the Communist regime closed it down and imprisoned most of its monks. Returned to the order in 1989, the monastery underwent massive architectural restorations to repair damage caused by years of neglect. Inside the monastery's main gate, you can visit a 17th-century church, housing a valuable collection of artworks from the Gothic era, and the famed library's two halls. Linked by an elaborately decorated passage, the two halls contain a collection of nearly 3,000 original manuscripts. • Captivated by the pictures of the beautiful libraries, we braved the snow and sub-zero temperature to go to the Strahov Monastery few days ago. A bit disappointed coz the libraries look much more spec...  more »
  • Then the library is spectacular, no doubt, is to see for sure. BUT I was a little annoyed by the fact that you had to add a surcharge to take photos.

  • Admission is 5 EUR to climb to second and eventually not able to get in unless you have a guide. Of course not listed anywhere that you pay a ticket to not see anything. Don't waste a single penny.

  • Super cool library. It's definitely a quick trip. If you want a closer more in-depth experience you will need to book a tour. There is a link to booking big tours on their website. If you don't have a lot of time it's still worth popping in. It's about $5 to get in. Another $2 if you want to be allowed to use your camera (in non-flash mode). It's a pleasant walk / loop to go to the monastery, swing by the Loreta Church and then continue down to Prague Castle. You can also do the walk in reverse.
  • The Strahov library is absolutely stunning. I could spend the hours in there without any problem whatsoever. Both the philosophical room and the theology room are gorgeous. Sadly you can't walk into the main room and be closer to the wonderful murals but that's to be understood considering the possible damage changes in humidity can do to them. I'm not a huge fan of charging people extra money to be allowed to take photographs.
  • Both halls are really beautiful, but since you are not allowed to enter them, a photo does the same job. There is not much else to see, so you are not going to spend a lot of time at this place. However, it is possible to book a tour in a small group and enter them. It makes more sense to visit the monastery in combination with the Petrin Tower, because both are located outside the city and close to each other.
  • To get the most out of your visit, make a reservation to see the library well ahead of your visit. We were only allowed behind the rope while others with reservations walked inside. Honestly, the two rooms posted online are what is worth seeing. But the Strahov Treasury & Picture Gallery are worth every crown, particularly if you enjoy religious art and ecclesiastical treasures.
  • Beautiful view from the teras. I didn't get to try the local beer brewed by the local.monks which ia a must. The garden-restaurant is a bit overpriced but the view is well worthed.
