Isola di Burano, Burano

#1 of 15 in Things to do in Burano
The small Venetian Isola di Burano is famous for its elaborate laceworks. You can browse several traditional lace shops and even the lace museum. Stroll among the reds, orange, blue, and green houses and buildings to Galuppi Square, the center of the island. Visit the Church of San Martino, which has its own leaning tower, as well as Giambattista Tiepolo's 18th-century painting of the crucifixion. Stop at one of the pastry stores to try the typical Burano cookie, bussolà buranello. At the waterfront, watch fishermen haul in their catch. • The colourful houses arew nice to look at, but that's it. Overpriced Restaurants with nonexistant service already on a Saturday in the out of season downtime of end of January. Do not want to know how...  more »
  • We were in one of the many colorful houses, really nice! Timeless place, it seems that everything has stopped. Wonderful eateries, bakeries to try out. Don't miss the black cat!

  • Think colored houses on a canal which reflect the colored houses. The story goes that the drunk fisherman would come back from the sea only to be confused by the houses that are very similar in architecture and size. The wives then decided to paint the houses a distinctive, bright color so it could be easily identified by the fisherman. There are delightful Piazza’s flanked with restaurants and coffee shops. The local bakery is excellent. Lace making is a craft that is not making it through the ages but is also something Burano is known for. Accessible by boat it is well worth the time and small expense. This was a highlight of our Tour of Europe.
  • It's a beautiful island near venice. You can reach their by boat . One can buy an all day boat ticket and visit all the nearby islands. It's a fisherman island and is famous for colorful houses.
  • Awesome experience to be in a such colourful village. Ferry 12 goes to Burano from Murano. But it will be crowded. So be prepared. Take your time in the island and relax.
  • Everywhere we went is like a picture in a book. Very nice place and good for taking photos. I would like to come during summer time.
  • I did love it but just don’t go to both Islands on Christmas day. They took too many people over to Island without enough boats to get them back timely. We had to wait passed dusk in very pressing, nearly panicking, line of people several hours, with a toddler, to get on an over crowded boat. This was my only scary time on a much beloved trip. Venice on Christmas was a dream, just don’t recommened trying to do both Islands on a Holiday.
