Basilica di Santa Maria della Salute, Venice

4.6
Discover the city’s religious and artistic heritage at Basilica di Santa Maria della Salute, one of the landmark buildings on the Grand Canal. The history of this building goes back to the early 17th century, when the city experienced a devastating outbreak of the plague. As a votive offering for the people’s deliverance from this pestilence, the city vowed to build and dedicate a church to Our Lady of Health (or Deliverance). The church was designed in the then-fashionable Baroque style, and construction began in 1631. Most of the art housed inside the church bears some reference to the historic plague. The emblematic dome of this building was an important addition to the city’s skyline, said to have inspired numerous artists, including Canaletto and J.M.W. Turner, among many others. Drop by the church’s famous facade, which is embellished with 125 statues. • It is a bit of a trip to get there by walking and honestly not sure it was worth it. Nothing great to look at inside and while it is nice from a distance, up close it just looks dirty.  more »

  • One of the least crowded areas to visit. It was beautiful and great to get away from the hustle and bustle of this the very touristy areas for a while. The architecture is stunning and it's difficult to appreciate the sheer scale of the church without seeing it for yourself. Simply lovely.
  • When Venice experienced an unusually devastating outbreak of the plague in 1630,as a votive offering for the city's deliverance from the pestilence, the Republic of Venice vowed to build and dedicate a church to Our Lady of Health. This impressive church is well located and the views from there are spectacular. This is also an area not full of tourists, so it is possible to have some quality time admiring the landscape and the works inside.
  • Very beautiful building right on the edge of Venice. Beautiful views from all directions as well.
  • Beautiful place and lot less crowd then other tourists destinations of Venice. Great place for photography, just amazing view from other side.
  • Great attraction, lots to do there especially buy the ticket to go at the roof top and be careful from the people at the entrance playing magic tricks and giving you Jamaican bands as they can rip you off in seconds and you wont even notice what happen with in seconds.
