Ponte dei Sospiri, Venice

4.3
An enclosed bridge over the Rio di Palazzo, Ponte dei Sospiri connects the new prison with the doge's Palace. In the 17th and 18th centuries, the view from the bridge was the last time condemned convicts saw Venice. Lord Byron wrote that the criminals would sigh at their last sight of the city. However, Lord Byron exercised a bit of literary license; the grating on the bridge openings would have made it difficult for the convicts to see anything. A more modern legend has it that lovers will be granted eternal bliss if they kiss on a gondola under the bridge at sunset while the bells of St. Mark's Cathedral toll. This served as a plotline for the film "A Little Romance." Using our world travel planner, Venice attractions like Ponte dei Sospiri can form part of a personalized travel itinerary.

  • Last year we saw him covered in a hardback, because he probably was cleaned up, now is in very good shape.

  • It was rewarding to make plans to see this and actually have it turn out as wonderfully as anticipated!  more »
  • We were there during carnival so views from the bridge where this picture was taken were difficult to come by. But we succeeded. Go to the palace and see everything, it's why you came to Venice.  more »

  • Visited this place during our free walking tour! Amazing view. I highly recommend taking walking tours if you wish to learn about the history of this place. It's quite astounding.
  • The majestic presence of the bridge is inspiring. Obviously not for those sentenced to imprisonment, the foreboding feelings that must of been felt at they crossed the bridge not knowing what to expect.
  • The Bridge of Sighs, known as the Ponte dei Sospiri in Italian, is one of the most famous bridges not just in Venice, but in the world. The bridge passes over the Rio di Palazzo and connects the Dogi's Palace to the Prigioni, the prisons that were built across the canal in the late 16th century. But where does its name come from, and why has this bridge become a symbol of romance in the modern era?
  • Pretty & Romantic. Just off St.Mark's Square. Hard to miss.
  • It’s a very small bridge with a cool story. On should definitely take a look at night - the view to the sea from this hidden bridge is sad but also romantic.

Where to stay in Venice

Save money and avoid tourist crowds by booking your accommodation outside the historical center of Venice. Central Venice is full of picturesque canals and narrow lanes, but it is also extremely noisy and hectic throughout the day and late into the night. You can explore the ancient city's charms at your own pace by staying at a comfortable B&B or small hotel located in the city's residential suburbs. To stay close to the finest beaches and restaurants, check into a hotel on the island of Lido, the city's famous seaside resort.
