Punta della Dogana, Venice

4.2
#8 of 76 in Museums in Venice
Housed in Venice's old customs building, Punta della Dogana is now a contemporary art museum. The name refers to the triangular area of the city where the Grand Canal meets the Guidecca canal, but it has now become synonymous with the building and its art exhibits. Previously empty for decades, the building was restored in 2009 by French art collector François Pinault, whose €20 million renovation showcases the building's "industrial and minimalist soul." Stand at the tip of the triangle, enjoying views of the vast sea ahead and the canals behind, before heading into the building for a look at some of Venice's finest contemporary art. • Two visits to Venice and twice closed Museum!... Isn't Peggy Guggenheim who wants... This iterative closure helped us to rediscover the great foundation of this protector of art... Thank you Mrs.

  • Upscale local place, where Gondola drivers mix with tourists. Great cozy ambiance. Clean. Delicious food. What more could you want? Good lunch. The fish of the day with vegetables was fresh, Mediterranean, and delectable.
  • Museum is gorgeous! Excellent views of several landmarks. Current exhibit by Damien Hirst I have mixed feelings on. An odd mix of pop culture/modern art posing as artifacts found in a ship wreck; it is well imagined, but not always well executed. With the wealth of materials and a clearly massive monetary investment used in the creation of the exhibit, I expected greater quality and more visual interest.
  • Wonderful place with great view of the heart of Venice. Light inside the building is incredible. A must see.
  • After 14 months of restoration, the punta della dogana museum by japanese architect, tadao ando opened to the public on june 6th during the venice art biennale. its first exhibition ‘mapping the studio: artists from the françois pinault collection’ was curated by alison m. gingeras and francesco bonami. owned by francois pinault, whose business empire also includes gucci and yves saint laurent, he has one of the world’s largest collections of contemporary art, of some 2,500 works, of which 141 are destined for the punta della dogana’s permanent collection.
  • Very well laid out museum. We saw the Damien Hirst exhibition which was very well presented.
