Mount Koyasan, Koya-cho

4.7
#1 of 36 in Nature in Wakayama Prefecture
World Heritage Site and headquarters of the Shingon sect of Japanese Buddhism, Mount Koyasan blends nature and spirituality in utmost harmony. The monk Kūkai first settled here in 816 CE as a retreat from the courtly intrigues of Kyoto; an eternally lit mausoleum in the middle of the immense east-side graveyard pays tribute to him. Visit the western side as well, to see a temple complex with a Kanpon Daitō pagoda in its center. Explore some of the 100 wooden temples dotting the area, and the nearby town's university dedicated to religious studies. I don't know if it will last, but this place is preserved the accidental tourist. The journey to get there by train will show you a breathtaking nature. We have made the encounter of a grandmother who was his last pilgrimage. It requires a small physical shape. A person with a disability cannot in my view make this pilgrimage because the structure is not suitable. The ascent is via a funicular and you access this haven of peace. It is customary to sleep among the monks for the night. Do not choose a Western room, take the traditional. While bathroom and Wc are separate, but is not annoying to live this experience in immersion. You will be served a meal and a breakfast, vegetarian, similar to what they eat. It's pretty simple, don't go down there for the comfort of bedding. The prices are a bit high, so as long as to take a temple with onsen for a bath after a day of market. As often the onsens are not mixed or private. But even by being modest, person don't you know the bottom, go also, really. People will look at you as if you are stuck and in a panic. Wash carefully before to get naked and without a towel into the bath. If you have a tattoo it is however forbidden. It is often very hot so if you have an outdoor rotemburo feel free to you sitting on the stones to cool and then walk. Most of the people do not take 10 minutes and it can be dangerous.
