Nara Park, Nara

4.5
#1 of 384 in Wildlife in Japan
Take a stroll among verdant trees and peaceful shrines of Nara Park, established in 1880. The park shelters relatively tame herds of sika deer, free to roam the lawns and gardens at will. Wander through groves of willows and cherry trees to spot picturesque ponds and admire numerous temples sprinkled throughout the park. The deer, although friendly, occasionally exhibit aggressive behavior in the presence of food--if you wish to feed them, purchase some rice crackers and keep your snacks away from their sight. Nara Park is just one of the many highlights you can arrange to see using our international travel planner, Nara Edition.

  • Vast natural park, containing many shrines, temples and monuments relating to the old capital of Japan. What is really great about this place is there fact that you can escape city life and walk freely about the place. There are numerous small shrines to visit and a great many of them are populated by deer that have been trained by locals to bow to you in order to get treats. Seeing a bowing deer is quite a thing! It is also very accessible from Kyoto And Osaka, with great bus connections from the railway station.
  • Very nice one day side trip from Osaka or Kyoto. The view are gorgeous during the fall. Plenty of deer to feed, and a lot of temples and shrines with unique features around the area. You will not get bored even just by walking around the area.
  • The scenery is really nice and the locals at the stores around the park are very helpful. The deer on the other hand are cute, but you get the odd one which can be aggressive, do be careful. The parks I'd say need some work done on them get more of the plant life back. Other then that, this location is a must if you're close by.
  • Great outing on a sunny day. Don't buy the loop bus ticket if you go on a weekend. You are better off on foot. Most places are within walking distance.
  • One of my favorite places I've traveled to in all of Japan. Beautiful park. Awesome being able to interact with so many deer. They generally sell treats you can give them for around 150 yen. Definitely worth checking out the temple and museum here if you get a chance as well.

Where to stay in Nara

The historic city of Nara has a welcome number of accommodations for an urban area of its importance and popularity. Close to the main train station stand the main high-rise hotels in the city, all towering over the commercial and modern district that greets train travelers on arrival. To the east, things get a little more luxurious, with hotels close to Nara Park particularly well-appointed and rich in additional facilities. Standard hotels stand in a cluster to the southeast of the old palace ruins, while a number of pleasant, no-frills guesthouses can be found in the residential suburbs.
