Todai-ji Temple, Nara

4.8
#1 of 171 in Things to do in Nara
A World Heritage Site dating back to 728 CE, Todai-ji Temple has served as a central Buddhist temple complex known for its administrative control over provincial temples. Today, it remains a pilgrimage and ritual site for international Buddhism. The main hall, a massive wooden building, contains a 15 m (49.2 ft) bronze statue of the Buddha flanked by bodhisattvas. Check out the onsite museum, which features rotating displays of the temple's collection of religious art and cultural artifacts. Try not to scare the deer roaming the temple grounds, as Shintoism considers them godly messengers. Planning Nara trip won't be overwheling when you use's Insprock itinerary maker.

  • The main temple is owerwhelming. The wooden construction gigantic. Do not miss the enormous bell behind the temple.  more »
  • It is really a site to see such a huge Buddha in such an old temple. We didn’t stay long so if you have a short amount of time this is definitely do-able.  more »
  • From Namba to NARA, approx. 30 min train ride. Then another 15 minutes bus ride at Park, Nara. To measure a full of deer and raluk, deer poaching. Todaiji temple there, scores of 600 Yen fee to the owner, not sure.

  • This is one of the most magnificent temples I've ever been. Passing through the great wooden gate got me shivering because I felt so humbled. The yard in front of the temple is so beautiful as well. For family traveler with baby stroller, there is access that can be used for both baby strollers and wheel chairs. No nursing room, but for toddlers will enjoy the visit because there are a lot of interesting objects to see and space available for moving.
  • Worth coming out of your way to visit while in Japan. There are many temples in this country, but this is one of the most impressive I’ve seen. Worth visiting outside of busy periods as this is a tourist magnet. Also earlier and later in the day is better for photography. The grounds and buildings are very well maintained, with obvious historical and cultural heritage. Highly recommend it.
  • The temple is absolutely stunning. The statue inside is enormous and beautiful. Friendly and photogenic deer as well. The gift shop at the end also has very cheap but cute souvenirs! I bought a couple for friends back home. Would highly recommend a visit!
  • Great Buddhist temple with largest budas statue made of bronze. Place worth visiting because of its unique statues (wooden ones in pillars of front gate are astonishing) and overall architecture. Usually it's extremely crowded so getting there shortly before opening is recommended to avoid queues.
  • Massive wooden structure housing one giant sitting Buddha and two more smaller ones (one on each side). This is an amazing historical site and is worth the trip to Nara to see. The entrance way and gates alone are a tribute to the construction and craftsmanship of the Japanese at the time it was built. When walking through the gates, remember to look up.
