Generally considered to be the oldest town established by European Americans in the Black Hills, Custer began as a mining town.
Eschew the tourist crowds and head to Prairie Berry Winery and Horseback Riding Tours. Venture out of the city with trips to Wind Cave National Park (Rankin Ridge Nature Trail & Wind Cave National Park). There's still lots to do: take a peaceful walk through Black Hills National Forest, admire the majestic nature at Custer State Park, cruise along Needles Highway, and get a new perspective on nature at The Museum @ Black Hills Institute.
