Al Fahidi Fort, Dubai

4.0
#1 of 43 in Museums in United Arab Emirates
See another side of Dubai at Al Fahidi Fort, detailing the history of the city and its people. Located within the grounds of a former fort--built in 1787, it is the oldest existing building in Dubai--the museum tells the story of trade and development in the city before the discovery of oil. Explore the main galleries for interesting exhibits and artifacts showing the local way of life, with particular focus on the 1800s and the independent traders and seafarers that lived in the port city at the time. Enjoy walking around the life-size replicas of family homes, a model mosque, and a recreated street market. Really nice little museum that gave us a great history of the city. I suggest going early on in your trip so you have a good understanding of the city itself.  more »

A visit to the Dubai Museum is enough to understand the history of the region over a couple of millennia.  more »

One thing I didn't know was that the Museum on certain days opens the evening, which is a big advantage especially in the summer where I took a day to 46 degrees. You don't have a lot of detail of the path inside the Museum, and it was empty so I was coming in the doors. The top is pretty bland, I was leaving it when I saw a door at the bottom left which gives a spiral descent. This is the real way ... the Museum is all underground, and it's wonderful. I suggest to meet this part of the city before seeing the other attractions. Will give you an overview of how Dubai grew fast.

The main museum in Dubai, it appeared to be a little insignificant next to all of the wondrous new buildings going up. Only opened in 1971 it shows the very interesting way of life of the people from the 1800's onwards. Fascinating glimpses of life before oil, (only found in the 1950's), when there was nothing more than fishing, pearl diving and sunshine.

Really enjoyed visiting Al Fahidi Fort & museum. Lots of interesting information about local life and the fishing trade that once established this ever increasing metropolis. Don't forget to check out the underground museum, we almost missed out. Only 3DHS per person entry fee.

Beautiful little tribute to Dubai's history. I've been here many times as a kid but seeing it as an adult for the first time gave me a lot more insight into the traditions and history of Dubai. Doesn't need a lot of time to get through so that's a plus.

If you want to learn a little bit more about Dubai, apart from tall buildings, fast cars, and huge malls, it's a must visit place. When we came there it looked small from the outside, but after roaming around exhibition rooms at the entrance, we found out that there are plenty exhibits and halls to see at the lower ground level. I don't like museums because almost everything is behind the glass. But here you get to walk around and take a closer look, sit next to exhibits and take a picture. But please don't touch 🖐🚫 #1 rule in any museum. BTW entrance fee 3 AED only 👍 not a tourist but I loved it!)

Its is a must visit place.. Don't miss it. Entrance fees only 3 dh & inside its well air conditioned. There's a shop inside sells books, photos, postcards & toys about Dubai. They also sell very good oud & Arabic perfumes but its a bit costly. Fort is one of the best museums in Dubai.

Where to stay in Dubai

Dubai is a city of hotels, with most of the world's leading chains represented. Rooms remain expensive and luxurious, as most establishments cater to visitors with deeper pockets. You can still save money on accommodations if you look hard enough. Move away from the coast for more affordable backpacker hostels and self-service apartments, as well as less expensive hotel rooms where a lack of luxurious amenities and less appealing views keep rates suited to budget travelers.
