Al Fahidi Fort, Dubai

See another side of Dubai at Al Fahidi Fort, detailing the history of the city and its people. Located within the grounds of a former fort--built in 1787, it is the oldest existing building in Dubai--the museum tells the story of trade and development in the city before the discovery of oil. Explore the main galleries for interesting exhibits and artifacts showing the local way of life, with particular focus on the 1800s and the independent traders and seafarers that lived in the port city at the time. Enjoy walking around the life-size replicas of family homes, a model mosque, and a recreated street market. • History well presented. Unfotunately the video presentation wasn't working. Some texts were hard to read due to darkness.  more »
  • The Dubai Museum was interesting. We went briefly because the Concierge suggested we get dropped off there as a good starting point to visit The Creek area. It seriously cost almost nothing to get in ...  more »
  • If you are in Dubai make sure you visit the museum. It provides an interesting and informative playback of Dubai’s relatively short history and huge acceleration as a nation over recent decades. A ste...  more »

  • Lovely layout addressing an admittedly difficult subject to chronicle the history of Dubai. Don't be deceived by the first courtyard into which you enter after buying your ticket - there is much more to see after walking down the slope and indoors including the story of how Dubai came about and the modem history as well as the local culture. I enjoyed this as it added a different dimension to our Dubai stay.
  • Showcases the olden times...how people lived..in their humble homes. Also weapons n trade how it was carried out. Most interesting how they made wooden boats.
  • It's good museum which reflects history of Arab people in Dubai. It's ticket is just 3 Durhams so quite affordable for anyone. If you have interest in the history then this is a place for you to visit or if you are a employee & tired of arrogant Arab employer or his arrogant family then you must bring them to this museum to recall them that how poor their grand parents were just few decades ago & how their forefather used to live a hard life. May be after visiting this museum, they start to show respect to expats like you. Anyway, I like this place in Dubai.
  • Nice historic place in the heart of old Dubai. Museum is underground and bit dark to create the ambience of the olden days... Kids who aren't used to darkness might be a bit afraid. Parking is also difficult there...
  • Never seen such musuem where you can find the history of whole country under one roof.... and that too underground...was an amazing experience... loved Dubai..

Where to stay in Dubai

Dubai is a city of hotels, with most of the world's leading chains represented. Rooms remain expensive and luxurious, as most establishments cater to visitors with deeper pockets. You can still save money on accommodations if you look hard enough. Move away from the coast for more affordable backpacker hostels and self-service apartments, as well as less expensive hotel rooms where a lack of luxurious amenities and less appealing views keep rates suited to budget travelers.
