Hoover Dam, Boulder City

Dam Landmark Must See
Hoover Dam, once known as Boulder Dam, is a concrete arch-gravity dam in the Black Canyon of the Colorado River, on the border between the U.S. states of Nevada and Arizona. It was constructed between 1931 and 1936 during the Great Depression and was dedicated on September 30, 1935, by President Franklin D. Roosevelt. Its construction was the result of a massive effort involving thousands of workers, and cost over one hundred lives. The dam was controversially named after President Herbert Hoover. The Visitor's Center is located at 81 Hoover Dam Access Rd, Boulder City, AZ 89005. Phone: (702) 494-2517

  • We decided at the last minute to visit Hoover Dam. It is only a 30 minute drive outside of Vegas, so made it easy to add this to our trip. There are several tours through the dam that are all relative...  more »
  • Excellent stop on their way to the Grand Canyon or roundtrip Las Vegas(1/2 hora), the view is spectacular, there is a parking lot public willing to 10 USD or pass the dam and there is free parking but you have to walk a little

  • This is my third time taking the Hoover Dam tour, but first time taking our young kids. We unfortunately did not arrive at the visitor center early enough to secure a reasonable Dam Tour time slot (ar...  more »

  • One of the most amazing engineering feats in the US. Plan ahead and get there early or buy tickets online. Parking can be a little tight. Definitely take the dam tour and the power plant tour. This is an amazingly beautiful place outside too. Great views of the gorge and Lake Mead from the dam. Go to the bridge and walk the pedestrian path for a breathtaking view.
  • Pretty darn cool. We got a rental so we could explore and was pleasantly surprised. What a wonderful example of engineering... We didn't do any of the tourist things inside, But drove around it and stopped at the over look. Breath taking views. Will remember it forever. If your on the fence about taking the drive while in Vegas- do it. Very cool.
  • One of the few places where you can be in two different time zones at the same time! Hoover dam is amazing! This place will leave your jaws dropped. From it's architectural marvels to it's engineering design, there's no word for it. To truly experience this place you have to take a tour. We went for the Power Plant Tour (they have another one that last longer, so when you pay for your tickets make sure to ask the ticket lady the difference between the two. Don't worry staff here are very friendly) and they take security here seriously. You will need to go through metal detectors and empty out your pockets (jackets and shoe's can stay on). After the tour remember to stop by the gift shop and their cafe. They have some dam hamburgers and dam hot dogs that are really good. I would stay away from their pre-made cold sandwiches in the refrigerator. All the prices are reasonable and you do get quality food. The walkways are pretty narrow for cars and pedestrians so be prepared to stop while people take pictures. There is ample free parking and if you can't find any, parking at their lot only cost $10.00.
  • Definitely recommend going to visit. We did the tunnel tour and walked the Dam on our own. It's beautiful! A little scary because you're so high up, but a sight to see!
  • I only can say one word for Hoover Dam and that word is " Awesome"". Looking at and being at Hoover Dam was a great experience. Parking was not bad and there were several levels as well as a parking structure which you will need to pay a fee We parked at the very top level (Not the parking structure) and had a great view of the Dam. The upper parking also had a gift shop. Unfortunately this trip we did not do the tour. Just a little heads up, if you decide to go through the exhibits, you will be subject to a security check. So be prepared to remove your belt and items in your pocket. They do take your picture at the beginning and you can purchase them at the end. You can also purchase your tour tickets or just pay to see the exhibit. The exhibit itself was fascinating and fantastic. The best part was walking out on the walkway. It definitely had an amazing view. All in all, this was a fantastic visit and will return soon to do the tour.

Where to stay in Boulder City

Staying in one of downtown’s comfortable hotels keeps you close to the town’s stores, restaurants, and museums while on vacation. There are several theme hotels to choose from, reminiscent of Las Vegas’ glitz and playfulness. A motel located on the outskirts of town is often a cheaper option, and will usually provide convenient access to the highway if you are passing through. Many accommodations offer swimming pools, a great way to cool down after a day exploring in the Nevada heat.
