Clingmans Dome, Great Smoky Mountains National Park

At an elevation of 2,025 m (6,643 ft or 1.25 mi), Clingmans Dome is both the tallest mountain of the Great Smokies and the highest point along the Appalachian Trail. Park your car near the summit and embark on 0.8 km (0.5 mi) walk to the observation tower atop the mountain. Note that while the trail is short and paved, it is very steep. Benches along the way provide a place to rest and catch your breath. The tower's observation platform provides panoramic views of the surrounding area, and handy signs help you identify points of interest. Bring a jacket with you; cold temperatures and rain are common here. • Was here the day after the 2017 eclipse, and was very busy (not sure how normal it was) great views of the park and surrounding area.  more »
  • My wife and I have been up there several time in the last 40 years. It gets a little harder as we get older but still worth it. We took friends here who are our age but not quite as fit. They did make...  more »
  • I always tell people this is the absolute worst home I've ever done. It's tough for people who aren't in shape!!! It is paved and very steep. But the view at the top I wouldn't do it again but I would...  more »

  • One of my personal "must-dos" when visiting the smokey mountain area. No matter the time of year as long as the visibility is clear for the day the views are unparalleled. Even having gone on a a foggy day the experience was a pleasant one. Do keep in mine that it is a pretty decent incline to the top so be prepared. There are benches along the way if you need to stop and rest for a bit. All in all one of my favorite spots with great views.
  • Very busy, but exceptionally beautiful. Wear comfortable shoes and bring your inhaler if you need one. Steep hill to climb, but worth it.
  • When we were there in mid November the observation tower was closed. Still had Beautiful views though. The tower will reopen in April 2018.
  • Get there as early as you can as it fills up fast. Beautiful views if it's not too cloud which it often is. Be prepared for a steep walk up a paved hill.
  • I go every year to check out the view. It is one of the best in the Smoky mountains. Nothing really compares to the look that the very old Appalachians have.
