Clingmans Dome, Great Smoky Mountains National Park

At an elevation of 2,025 m (6,643 ft or 1.25 mi), Clingmans Dome is both the tallest mountain of the Great Smokies and the highest point along the Appalachian Trail. Park your car near the summit and embark on 0.8 km (0.5 mi) walk to the observation tower atop the mountain. Note that while the trail is short and paved, it is very steep. Benches along the way provide a place to rest and catch your breath. The tower's observation platform provides panoramic views of the surrounding area, and handy signs help you identify points of interest. Bring a jacket with you; cold temperatures and rain are common here. • Weekday. Afternoon. Cars parked all the way down the hill for a mile. Lucked out and got a spot in the lot. The walk to the structure was very steep and long. It was also so foggy you couldn't see any...  more »
  • The drive up to the top of the mountain isn't to bad. There are lots of places to pull over for some nice views. Once at the top there is a large parking lot and store. From there its a half mile hike...  more »
  • It is quite the 1/2 mike trek up the path, but worth it when you get to the top. The views are amazing! There's not enough parking for sure...we had to park way down the road and home back up.  more »

  • CLINGMANS DOME, TN DON'T MISS THIS ONE AWESOME VIEW. .. CHECK VISIBILITY ( MILES ) BEFORE YOU GO... At 6,643 feet, Clingmans Dome is Great Smoky Mountains National Park's highest point. It is the highest point in Tennessee, and the second highest point east of the Mississippi. Only North Carolina's Mt. Mitchell (6,684 feet) rises higher.
  • Clingmans Dome, if you are on a vacation in Gatlinburg you might as well go check it out. It's pretty cool, it is a good walk though and a good drive. Make sure you top off your tank for you head up the Mountain.
  • This was definitely one of the best experiences I've had. The half mile uphill hike almost did me in as I am not in the best shape but I was determined and I am glad I was. The view is the best in all of the Smoky Mountains.
  • One of the most amazing experiences of my life. The half mile hike to the Dome is a little hard if you are not in shape. They have places to stop and rest but the view is phenomenal. My wife and I went at sunset and it's an experience and feeling you can't put into words. It gets cold and the air is a little thin so come prepared. You will not be disappointed.
  • We do enjoy the view, but at my age climbing the trail is a little like eating an elephant, one bite at a time.
