Bayou Bend Collection and Gardens, located in the River Oaks community in Houston, Texas, United States, is a 14acre facility of the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston (MFAH) that houses a collection of decorative art, paintings and furniture. Bayou Bend is the former home of Houston philanthropist Ima Hogg. Bayou Bend was marked with a Texas Historical Commission marker in 1973 and was listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 1979.Mansion and gardensThe mansion, designed by architect John F. Staub, was built between 1927 and 1928 for Ima Hogg and her brothers, William C. and Michael Hogg. Covered in towering trees and thick undergrowth, the home site was, in Miss Hogg's words, "nothing but a dense thicket". The home was one of the first to be located in the River Oaks neighborhood developed by the Hogg brothers. During construction, Ima Hogg insisted that as many trees as possible be kept. Only one tree was sacrificed to make room for the house, and the gardens were created around the existing trees. Ima Hogg gave the home its name, over the objection of her brother Will, who said the name was "too muddy and 'muskeetery' and malarial". Ima responded that "not everyone can have a bayou".

  • Bayou Bend is a beautiful place with incredible gardens - it is reminiscent of Winterthur. The house is fabulous and there is nothing else like it in Texas. The gardens are wonderful but sustained dam...  more »
  • The house, built by Ima Hogg, is arranged so that a different era of history is depicted in each room. So it gives you an idea of how furnishings for a well-off family would have been in that timefram...  more »

  • This a very nice and pleasant park. Naturally, I would enjoy visiting a place like this. Unfortunately I had broken my leg several days prior to my visit here and I had to use a wheel chair and started to really appreciate wheel chair friendly places. Unfortunately, this is not one of those places - hard to pass trails, a lot of places with several stairs and not a single ramp. The house has two stories and there is a lift to the 2nd floor but it only for staff use! In short, it's a great place but they have a lot to improve in the accessibility department.
  • Like stepping back in time, the Bayou Bend Collection and gardens present a glimpse of an affluent past frozen in time. It's lovely and worth seeing. Over Christmas the decorations are delightful, a great place to bring the whole family.
  • My husband and I went to see this place today and we were both really disappointed. This place was flooded during hurricane Harvey and left the gardens pretty much in a bad shape. And perhaps that it’s fall season didn’t help either. Flowers are not in bloom and whatever greenery were left needs some TLC. I feel that it’s a reap off to charge people an entrance fee of $10 each wihen the condition of the garden is not up to par and all you could do is see the main house which has lots of history but nothing extraordinarily special.
  • We had so much fun joining the tour! Our guide Dianne was so knowledgeable and friendly, she took the time to answer our questions. Our 60 mins tour turned in to 120 mins without even knowing it. We enjoyed it very much knowing the history and story about the house. They also have xmas lights put up to make this family friendly event! Totally love it and hoping we find time for xmas event! 😍😍
  • It's a large property, easy to submerge yourself into the history of the location.

Where to stay in Houston

If you come to Houston to splurge while on holiday, book a luxurious room at a downtown hotel. This area is an ideal base for getting to know Houston, offering you a chance to stay within walking distance of one of the country's largest theater districts. Houston bills itself as the "Energy Capital of the World," so it's no surprise that it houses many "green" hotels, their garages designed to cater to electric vehicle owners. For something completely different, enjoy a Texas country experience at a working ranch outside the city limits.
