Downtown Aquarium, Houston

2.8
#4 of 14 in Zoos & Aquariums in Texas Gulf Coast
In addition to 200 aquatic species and a variety of exhibits, Downtown Aquarium also features a restaurant, games and rides, and a ballroom for events. The complex, housed in two repurposed downtown buildings, boasts almost 2 million l (530,000 gal) of tanks. Visit themed areas, such as the Louisiana Swamp, the Gulf of Mexico, the Rainforest, and more, all filled with their associated creatures. Hop on board the site's train for a loop of the entire facility, passing the shark tank and revving through glass aquarium tunnels. If you work up an appetite, enjoy a meal at the restaurant, where you can dine on seafood specialties in front of one of the main display tanks. Visit the website to make reservations and get information on special events. Downtown Aquarium is just one of the many highlights you can arrange to see using our online itinerary creator, Houston Edition.

  • Went on a Monday afternoon and lines were pretty much non existent. Did the CityPass and it seems like a great value. Upgraded here to all rides and that seemed to be worth it because the upgrade was ...  more »

  • The food was AMAZING! Best coconut shrimp I've ever had. The aquarium itself is kind of small. If you have small children though it's perfect, not so long that they get bored and since they want to look at everything it takes a bit longer to walk through. I went without my child once and walked through the whole thing in maybe 30 mins tops. They do have an amusement park outside for the bigger kids, we have not been yet though as my daughter is still too little. Great family fun to be found here!
  • The day of our visit was very crowded. The staff was pleasant, and the grounds were well kept. Everyone in my family felt the aquarium was smaller than expected for such a large city, but the fish and reptiles were beautiful and varied. We all enjoyed the train ride and petting the rays the most!
  • Pretty good. Glad we got the City Pass so we didn't have to pay full price. This aquarium is on the small side. Plenty of cool marine life though. The white tiger is amazing to watch. Be sure to pet the stingrays!
  • For being in downtown, parking was pretty painless. I liked that it wasn't a all day thing compared to the zoo or space center Houston. The underground shark tank and white tiger were my highlights. We didn't eat at the restaurant so I don't have a input on that. The rides were fun, the lines moved at a steady pace. I recommend getting the all day pass instead of paying for each activitiy. Overall it was fun. (Also nice views of the downtown buildings including 700 Louisiana).
  • Parking was convenient but not free. Admission is a decent price- the day pass is more affordable than doing the individual rides especially since the aquarium itself is pretty small so it's a quick visit unless you do the rides and extend the day. It felt a bit gimmicky and was smaller than I expected. The white tigers were fun to see although I worry about their health in keeping them indoors out of the natural light in captivity. The area was very clean and the staff friendly. My son enjoyed playing in the fountains. We went during Spring Break so the lines were long and overall very busy but we still have a good time.
