Downtown Aquarium, Houston

2.8
#3 of 12 in Zoos & Aquariums in Texas Gulf Coast
In addition to 200 aquatic species and a variety of exhibits, Downtown Aquarium also features a restaurant, games and rides, and a ballroom for events. The complex, housed in two repurposed downtown buildings, boasts almost 2 million l (530,000 gal) of tanks. Visit themed areas, such as the Louisiana Swamp, the Gulf of Mexico, the Rainforest, and more, all filled with their associated creatures. Hop on board the site's train for a loop of the entire facility, passing the shark tank and revving through glass aquarium tunnels. If you work up an appetite, enjoy a meal at the restaurant, where you can dine on seafood specialties in front of one of the main display tanks. Visit the website to make reservations and get information on special events. Downtown Aquarium is just one of the many highlights you can arrange to see using our online itinerary creator, Houston Edition.

  • To say nice Aquarium where you can meet much of the local animals, they have a nice staff, you can play some of the fish, and above all what I liked most was the Tiger.

  • First the Parking. It is cash only and $8 self or $10 valet, so better know that up front then try to drive around and find an ATM. The City Pass clearly says no need to wait in ticket line. Guess wha...  more »

  • Unfortunately we went into the exit, so we only got to see the last half of the aquarium before I got too tired (chemo treatments suck) and we had to leave, but it was amazing what little we saw! You can pet and feed sea rays (sea flap flaps), there's a wonderful restaurant with a huge tank with lots of sea life, and there's a big multiple story tank by the stairs that has lots of fish. Outside of the aquarium there are lots of rides for children to be entertained by. There's also a building dedicated just to the sharks. It's definitely worth the money and great for kids and adults alike!
  • This place was super cool for kids and adults. It is so much more than an aquarium. It has rides and a train outside, a wonderful restaurant that is surrounded by the aquarium so you can view the wildlife floating by your table as you enjoy your brunch or lunch. The have rescued tigers and other animals. There is a bar too. It has a neat "touching" room where kids "of all ages" can pet / feel some of the aquarium animals. We have a very nice aquarium in Baltimore but this one is much more interactive. I would recommend it for an interesting tourist activity or just for lunch.
  • Overall a great visit, but there were definite low points. The best thing about the aquarium was definitely petting and feeding the rays - they were so soft and squishy! What upset my sister and I were the non-aquatic animals. There was a rather large parrot in a very small cage, say 2 1/2 - 3ft radius, and a white tiger in an all plastic indoor enclosure. The fours stars is because we had fun in the beginning, but ending our tour feeling upset for the animals definitely does bot warrant a 5 star rating.
  • I took a wonderful, amazing date here on a Saturday night. I told them that we wanted to walk though the aquarium. They sold me aquarium tickets and reef tickets. I wondered why I paid nearly $30. After we exited the aquarium, we didn't use the reef tickets. I asked if I could exchange them for ride tickets and they wouldn't did any refunds or exchanges. If you want value for your money, you're better off going to moody gardens. Again, make sure you know what you're paying for, because once they take your money, it's final. Also, I feel really bad for the white tiger that's in a very small area. The tiger should be at a zoo where it can enjoy the sun and fresh air
  • The Downtown Aquarium in downtown Houston represents the culture of the city of Houston by attracting tourists to not only the Aquarium, but also to the city. You can find culture at places that attract tourists because it is the cultural core of the community. Historically, the Houston Downtown Aquarium has been a place where tourists flock to to see the wide variety of marine creatures and the spacious tanks. The characteristics that make up the culture of the Houston Downtown Aquarium are additions to the Aquarium to make the Aquarium more appealing to tourists and more stores and restaurants popping up around the Aquarium to make more business from the tourists at the Aquarium. This culture is unique because there are few aquariums in the US that attract as many people as the Downtown Aquarium in Houston does. The Downtown Aquarium is an example of a cultural core because business and food is centered around the Aquarium.

Where to stay in Houston

If you come to Houston to splurge while on holiday, book a luxurious room at a downtown hotel. This area is an ideal base for getting to know Houston, offering you a chance to stay within walking distance of one of the country's largest theater districts. Houston bills itself as the "Energy Capital of the World," so it's no surprise that it houses many "green" hotels, their garages designed to cater to electric vehicle owners. For something completely different, enjoy a Texas country experience at a working ranch outside the city limits.
