Downtown Aquarium, Houston

2.7
#3 of 12 in Zoos & Aquariums in Texas Gulf Coast
In addition to 200 aquatic species and a variety of exhibits, Downtown Aquarium also features a restaurant, games and rides, and a ballroom for events. The complex, housed in two repurposed downtown buildings, boasts almost 2 million l (530,000 gal) of tanks. Visit themed areas, such as the Louisiana Swamp, the Gulf of Mexico, the Rainforest, and more, all filled with their associated creatures. Hop on board the site's train for a loop of the entire facility, passing the shark tank and revving through glass aquarium tunnels. If you work up an appetite, enjoy a meal at the restaurant, where you can dine on seafood specialties in front of one of the main display tanks. Visit the website to make reservations and get information on special events. Downtown Aquarium is just one of the many highlights you can arrange to see using our online itinerary creator, Houston Edition.

  • I love aquariums and this one was no different. The exhibits were all put together in a very creative way. The variety of sea life was impressive. There was some hurricane damage in the shark tank but...  more »

  • This place ROCKED!!! The kids (8,11,14) and husband loved it. We dined for lunch on a Friday in July. I was pleasantly surprised that it was not packed. The food was great and our server was outstanding. Thank you Bobbie for taking care of us. Oh, and save room for dessert, it was awesome. The portions are large so I was glad we shared entrees with the kids and 4 of us shared one dessert. We will be back!
  • AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!! This place rocks! We were traveling through Houston and the Aquarium restaurant had tons of parking and we were seated immediately. People seemed scared to get up and walk around and view the fish...I wasn't! I think I started a movement, as others got up and started to view with their kids. As for the food, I had the onion stack for a meal and it was yummy. Fried pickles, onions and hot peppers, it was awesome. My kids loved their meal and my wife loved her lettuce wraps. A great experience! Go!!!!
  • Wasn't very big of an aquarium l, was surprised when we came to the exit. Also the novelty of a white tiger is nice but let us be aware that these are not natural but bred that way for public appeal. The best part about it was the train ride that, unless you upgrade for $6.00, you don't have access to. So all in all not the best experience but something quick to do if you have little ones that are awed by colors and fish.
  • OMG! My family and I love the Houston downtown Aquarium! They have awesome seafood! My 7yr old is always impressed by and ready to gaze upon the many fish in their huge tank/ aquarium that literally sits in the center of the restaurant! I love the ambiance of the aquarium front the seating to the lighting....perfect! And you must obtain one of their select club card memberships! It has given back to me and my family on several occasions. If you are ever in Houston or near the downtown area you must check this place out, their awesome!
  • The wait to be seated is usually very long but what can you expect from such a popular restaurant!! Never had any bad experiences with the food nor people there. Great mood and good food! However, I wish they can mention to the CEO of Downtown Aquarium to have a more of a non-seafood selection rather then seafood selection items.

Where to stay in Houston

If you come to Houston to splurge while on holiday, book a luxurious room at a downtown hotel. This area is an ideal base for getting to know Houston, offering you a chance to stay within walking distance of one of the country's largest theater districts. Houston bills itself as the "Energy Capital of the World," so it's no surprise that it houses many "green" hotels, their garages designed to cater to electric vehicle owners. For something completely different, enjoy a Texas country experience at a working ranch outside the city limits.
