Holocaust Museum Houston, Houston

4.6
#6 of 27 in Museums in Houston
Through authentic artifacts, documents, and footage, Holocaust Museum Houston commemorates those who perished in one of humankind's biggest tragedies. Learn about the conditions inside ghettos and concentration camps, see how Jewish communities in Nazi-occupied Europe were reduced to rubble, and discover how propaganda was used to turn public opinion against the Jewish people. The museum features an authentic railcar similar to those used to transport people to the camps, as well as a fishing boat like the ones Danish fishermen used to ferry Jews to safety in Sweden. Audio features allow you to hear the testimonies of survivors who left war-torn Europe to settle in the Houston area. The museum is wheelchair-accessible and provides audio tours in English and Spanish. The audio guide is free for visitors with seeing and hearing difficulties. • I had been wanting to go and finally went. I had read and seen lots of movies and books on the Holocaust, but it so different to see the stories being told and see the actual physical items from the H...  more »
  • The Art Circle group for the Holocaust Museum is on roll this year! Tonight we toured two private high-rise residences in Houston to see art collections. At the second residence, they had a young lady...  more »
  • While it is in a temporary location, the Museum can be seen very interesting, mostly because it features guided tour free of charge. In our case, our guide was excellent, a pretty young girl who is a school teacher and his explanations were quite clear and thoughtful. Get one with crushing heart.

  • Very organized museum and you'll always leave with a very informed and transformed mind. Lots of things to look at and a myriad of emotions to feel. It is a rewarding experience. Not one that should be passed up. Free passes for students. Free parking on the premises.
  • I went with my family and we decided to take the tour of the museum and the tour guide was awesome. He was very knowledgeable and told us interesting facts and stories about the pictures and objects in the museum. I really enjoyed my time here and I definitely recommend the tour!
  • I would have thought that the museum should have been more emotional and thought provoking in order to ensure that this NEVER occurs again. The ONLY thing worth seeing was the interactive display with the survivor where you could ask questions and get answers to 1600 prerecorded sound bytes (ask him his favorite joke!!)
  • Just the outside was amazing to see. Unfortunately when I visited, the main location was closed due to renovations. The renovations were scheduled to be completed in September 2017 per the sign on the door. I visited November 2017 and they were still at the temporary location. I walked there from another museum so I wasn't very happy that I walked in Houston weather to see this and it was closed but I am sure it would've been amazing. In order to get to the temporary location, I was going to have to pay Uber almost $40 so I chose not to take the trip there as that was $40 plus my ticket to enter the museum. I hope to visit in the future!
  • We were lucky enough to take a tour with a daughter of a survivor... truly magnificent story and though the main site is being worked on the temp site is still very much worth the visit. If you get the chance, take the guided tour.

Where to stay in Houston

If you come to Houston to splurge while on holiday, book a luxurious room at a downtown hotel. This area is an ideal base for getting to know Houston, offering you a chance to stay within walking distance of one of the country's largest theater districts. Houston bills itself as the "Energy Capital of the World," so it's no surprise that it houses many "green" hotels, their garages designed to cater to electric vehicle owners. For something completely different, enjoy a Texas country experience at a working ranch outside the city limits.
