  • World class art destination that's always fresh and always free! Parking has recently been expanded and upgraded. Please note that there are a number of venues in various buildings clustered around the main collection. Each building contains a vastly different yet refreshing experience for those who love art. Though pleasant, the staff are there to protect the art and art experience... not to interpret or explain the art. This is done on purpose so that visitors will form their own conclusions. We go back often!
  • Very beautiful gallery. It's a nice and quiet place to reflect on the surreal/modern/post-modern art pieces displayed. The staff are nice and helpful in providing information about the art pieces and answering questions that we have. They're very strict on taking pictures and keep a close eye on visitors.
  • Amazing museum that mainly focuses on antiquities, plus the surrealism, modernism, and post-modernism movements. The museum is designed to give you a very personal experience with the art, so there are no explanatory plaques next to the works. The museum offers periodic talks with local art experts and historians about the current highlighted exhibitions, all of which are free and open to the public. Entry is always free. No photography of the art is allowed.
  • The museum's pieces of art are very diverse, including early to mid-twentieth century works of important artists like Yves Tanguy and Picasso. There is also an extensive collection of pop art and contemporary art from Pollock, Warhol, and Rothko, among others. The museum's permanent collection about Antiquities and works of Byzantine, Medieval and Tribal art are amazing too. This place is definitely a must for art lovers.
  • Ugly building. Passable collection. I got the feeling the collectors found 5 artists they felt comfortable with and that's where all of their money went. The worst part were the art "guards". You cannot take a step without 2 of them breathing down your neck. They outnumbered the guests 2 to 1. I couldn't wait to get out if there. Houston Museum of Fine Art was much better. MUCH.

Where to stay in Houston

If you come to Houston to splurge while on holiday, book a luxurious room at a downtown hotel. This area is an ideal base for getting to know Houston, offering you a chance to stay within walking distance of one of the country's largest theater districts. Houston bills itself as the "Energy Capital of the World," so it's no surprise that it houses many "green" hotels, their garages designed to cater to electric vehicle owners. For something completely different, enjoy a Texas country experience at a working ranch outside the city limits.
